cyberspace on screen

this will be a collaborative list of movies from the 1990s or early 2000s, featuring cyberspace, hackers, and the power of new technology.

LONG LIVE NINETIES CINEMA!

1. hackers (1995) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
genuinely one of my favourite films. an aesthetic masterpiece, brilliant cinematography, really fun graphics, totally wild plot -- teenage hackers on the run from the U.S. government. watch if you're looking for a good time and a lot of bright colours and silly names.

2. the matrix (1999) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
a classic. it would be hard to beat this movie, and why would you even try? watch for any reason, at any time.

3. virtuosity (1995) ★ ★ ★
a bad movie made greater by denzel washington and russell crowe. an AI program built to train cops escapes, and its personality is built from the worst people in history. chaos ensues. watch if you want a manic AI on a killing spree, and some very interesting CGI.

4. scooby-doo! and the cyber chase (2001) ★ ★
over-the-top predictions about what cyberspace would bring to humanity... the scooby gang... baseball... involves being sucked into a video game. there was a tie-in for the gameboy advance. watch if you like scooby-doo!

5. ghost in the shell (1995) ★ ★ ★ ★
cybernetically enhanced cops hunt a hacker in a cyberpunk city. great animation, really iconic scenes. watch if you're looking for something worth your time, something about being owned and operated, something about what it means to be a person.

6. johnny mnemonic (1995) ★ ★ ★
keanu reeves is a data mule avoiding assassins and trying to deliver a package of information before it literally fries his brain. watch if you've already seen the matrix and you want to chase the feeling. or don't, because it's not as good.

7. strange days (1995) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
a distributor of... experiences... comes into contact with a terrifying film showing a murder. brilliant cinematography and acting, a great soundtrack, and some really important themes. i feel compelled to state: check the warnings for this film. watch when you're ready, it's worth it.
