hi, i'm fiver, the webmaster of cinemademon. it makes me feed it movies.
here's a list of my favourite horror movies from the past quarter of a century! i've tried to choose movies that i feel are objectively
pretty good films, rather than just the ones i enjoy. there'll be a separate list for those! i've also tried not to include too many of the
A24 rotation (midsommar, hereditary, etc), because people already know about those, and they're a bit overrated.
1. nope (2022) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
one of my favourite films of all time. it's about movies, it's about hollywood, it's about race, it's about aliens, it's about spectacle,
and most importantly, it's about horses. 10/10.

2. the invisible man (2020) ★ ★ ★ ★
the first movie i saw in cinemas by myself. i love the suspense and the colours in this film. don't go into it expecting an adaptation
of the book, though - it draws some inspiration from the concept, but it's certainly not following the plot.

3. candyman (2021) ★ ★ ★ ★
a rare horror sequel that isn't disappointing. i still don't love it quite as much as the original, but it really examines the
key themes of the film in an explicit and interesting way.

4. incantation (2022) ★ ★ ★ ★
severely underrated taiwanese horror film. found footage, weird ending, lots of interesting interlocking elements... definitely recommend if you
are looking for something new and spooky!

5. it follows (2014) ★ ★ ★ ★
this film compels me mostly based on the cinematography, and the fact that the director said it was based on a recurring dream. it sure
feels like it, too - the technology, cars, fashion; everything has a sense of no-time. it's anachronistic on purpose, which is an awesome choice.

6. the babadook (2014) ★ ★ ★ ★
you could argue that this one is overrated, but i honestly think it deserves the hype. well-written, well-acted, well-filmed. sad, but also
scary - it strikes the right balance.

7. saw (2004) ★ ★ ★ ★
before i watched this movie, all i knew about saw was that it was gory. and that's true to an extent, but the first movie is very well-constructed,
the soundtrack is very catchy, and plot is interesting, and i wish more than anything i could experience the twist ending again for the first time!

 |
8. evil dead (2013) ★ ★ ★
now THIS is gory. neon said it wasn't that gory - and then someone's head got split open with a chainsaw. a really great modern take on the original,
interesting enough plot... an engaging film that follows well from the first movie!

9. american psycho (2000) ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
one of my favourite movies. self-aware, a critique of 1980s wall street misogynistic culture - brilliantly rich cinematography, set design, costuming. the dialogue
is brilliant. the ending is really intriguing to me, and i love it.

10. lake mungo (2008) ★ ★ ★
i have mixed feelings putting this here, but it is iconic. firstly, it's really sad - not so scary. secondly, it does sort of
perpetuate an unfortunate trend in australian cinema to mystify and exploit land and traditional owners, particularly using a narrative
of an innocent white girl lost in the wilderness. however, i think it is self-aware about that to some extent, especially considering how it critiques australian culture in other ways. it's a really interesting 'documentary-style' film, and it's worth a watch.
